It stands to reason that the fitter you are the more energetic you're going to be in the sack (heavy breathing is one thing but wheezing is a major turn-off). But living a healthy lifestyle could have a lot more impact on your sex life than you think.

New research has revealed that those in good shape enjoy better sex well into their old age and are almost twice as likely to have a higher libido, having sex once a week or more.

According to the study, which looked at the sex lives of over 6,000 people, those who keep themselves fit and healthy are still enjoying lovemaking well into their eighties while those who are out of shape give up on sex up to two decades earlier.

The results, published online in the British Medical Journal, also indicated a significant difference between the attitudes of men and women to sex. This was most noticeable among the 75-to-85 age group where only 17 per cent of women were sexually active compared to 39 per cent of men.
