How office gossip could make or break your career

Office gossipDo you enjoy a good gossip?

If the answer's yes – and let's be honest, it probably is – then you might want to give some thought to new research from Indiana University.

The study revealed that people who are targets of gossip are negatively evaluated during formal work meetings, including veiling criticism with sarcasm or talking up another colleague for comparison.

The researchers found that gossip on a formal setting, such as at work, was almost always negative. Yet informal gossip – the type you indulge in when you meet friends for a coffee – is more direct, so it's more obvious when someone is being criticised.

Work gossip, on the other hand, is more likely to involve veiled criticism – and it can be stopped or redirected by group efforts to change the subject.

Tim Hallett, assistant professor in IU Bloomington's Department of Sociology, says: "When you're sitting in that business meeting, be attentive when the talk drifts away from the official task at hand to people who aren't present.

"Be aware that what is going on is a form of politics and it's a form of politics that can be a weapon to undermine people who aren't present. But it can also be a gift. If people are talking positively it can be a way to enhance someone's reputation."

Carey Mulligan: 'Too big' for clothes on Vogue shoot

Carey MulliganShe's the hottest starlet on the block with the kind of figure that most of us could only dream of having.

But Carey Mulligan, star of An Education, has revealed that all the size zero clothes provided for her to wear on a photo shoot for US Vogue were too small.

Carey, who is on the cover of the October issue of US Vogue, told The Express: "It all looks so glamorous but all of the clothes that had come in from Paris were sample sizes.

"The cover dress was very pretty but wouldn't go over my a***. Sample size is very, very tiny. I'm actually wearing a towel around my waist and the bottom is clipped up because I couldn't fit."

We're sure Carey would look gorgeous even if she was wearing a towel, but it does make you think about how 'real' the pictures we see in magazines really are, doesn't it?

Enjoy a behind-the-scenes video of Carey's magazine shoot (not featuring her wearing a towel, unfortunately).

Swiss launch shelter for divorced men

Upset manMen often don't get the same level of support as women when their marriages break down. But a Swiss pastor named Andreas Cabalzar is on a mission to change that.

Last September, four men visited him to ask for help after separating from their wives. So he set up a shelter in the village of Erlenbach to help them.

The shelter, which is the only one of its kind, charges men £110 per week rent – and the project receives more applications every week from men who want to stay there.

Pastor Cabalzar said: "Eighty per cent of the time it is the wife asking for a divorce and the children stay in the family home while the father leaves with his suitcases and becomes more vulnerable.

"No more than three newly separated fathers can stay as it gives a very good synergy. They speak and help each other; it makes a good self-help group."

Some men stay for a few days, others for a few weeks, but Pastor Cabalzar makes sure that the stay is as short as possible. He is now seeking financial backing to find more houses within his parish to help separated fathers rebuild their lives while maintaining contact with their children.

Do you think we should have shelters for newly separated men in this country? Leave a comment below...
